Redesigned the core 3D design curriculum to emphasize sensory awareness, ethical making, and reflective practice through the cycle Think → See → Think More → Make → Experience. (Developed 2025; implemented 2026.) Teaching Philosophy Summary I design 3Design foundation course to integrate technical, conceptual, and ethical approaches to three-dimensional design. Through observation, reflection, and material experimentation, students learn that every act of making is also an act of thinking and care. Courses Taught •Drawing •Two-Dimensional Design •Three-Dimensional Design •Painting •Ideas of Visual Culture: Art, Media, and Computers CURRICULAR DEVELOPMENT AND TEACHING INNOVATION •Re-envisioning of ART 14: Three-Dimensional Design into Spatial Foundations: 3D Design, Installation, and Time-Based Media Developed a new foundations curriculum integrating 3D design, installation, and time-based media through attention, care, and sensory practice. Sequence includes units on Form and Memory, Space and Site, Time and Interaction, and Reflection and Portfolio Review. •Sketchbook: The Thinking Studio Created a semester-long reflective practice linking observation, material experimentation, and concept development. Students use sketchbooks as processing spaces for turning perception into form. •Foundations Exhibition – “Learning to See” (Spring 2026) Designed and curated departmental exhibition featuring student work from Spatial Foundations, highlighting integration of sensory awareness and ethics of making. Service to Department •Foundations Curriculum Working Group — Lead faculty for ART 14 revision (Spatial Foundations), 2025–2026. •Co-organizer, Foundations Colloquium (Fall 2026): Art as Attention and Care.

Jamie Nakagawa Boley
Painting, installation, and time-based work engaging waterways as sites of memory, relation, and intergenerational care.
PROCESS
My work is grounded in an investigative journey through land and waterways, where crossing rivers becomes a method of inquiry. I move through specific sites, seeking to understand the histories that exist alongside those that were told—listening to what the land holds and what water carries forward.
This process unfolds through observation, movement, and return. I document these encounters through notes, sketches, and material collection, allowing the work to emerge over time as a record of presence and relation.
MATERIALS
I work across painting, drawing, video, and time-based installation, incorporating plant materials and found elements connected to specific places. Oil, graphite, and layered mark-making function as both image and trace—holding gestures of movement, memory, and accumulation.
Materials are chosen for their relationship to land and their ability to carry time. Each surface becomes a site where physical and lived experience are embedded and held.
MEANING
This work engages waterways as sites of Indigenous memory, intergenerational care, and survival. Rivers and crossings become markers of movement, displacement, and persistence—holding histories that remain present within the land.
Through these works, I consider what it means to stand in the gap: to hold space for others, to carry forward knowledge, and to remain in relation across generations. The work creates a space where past and present coexist, and where what has been hidden continues to surface.
